Baby great egrets at Gatorland

This mom has her hands full. Three baby great egrets. These were the only babies at Gatorland when I was there. I'm thinking they were the first ones born. There are several other nests with eggs so soon the bird rookery there will be loud with babies crying to be fed. I missed the other parent flying in with a fish but made it as the mom (I'm assuming the female) started feeding them. It looked like she was eating first and then upchucking pieces of fish to give them. Yum! The babies are so cute with their fuzzy heads and big yellow beaks. They were moving around quite a bit. That nest is going to be full when those babies start to grow. Hopefully, none of them will fall out as the nest overcrowds. There are hungry alligators waiting below.

  5. Oh, those baby egrets are so cute, but they don't even look real. Their little feathers look electrified with static electricity, making egret 'fros.

  7. Great photos. Boy are those babies ugly, but a mother's love will help them become beautiful later on.

  14. Dina those pictures are fantastic. And (fellow Floridian) you have given me another wonderful place to add to our 'must see' list. I'd go to Orlando for that -- as we would not necessarily do for whatever those other attractions there are ;>). Thanks for sharing.

(We're in Ft Myers -- and fairly new to the whole State.)

I'm going back to your blog now to scroll around.

  15. Dina,
Where does one start? With the header I suppose. What I dazzling picture. It's easy to see why the hovering pelican has the place of honor. It sums up "City Wildlife Adventures" perfectly.
What a privilege it is to admire your Great egret nesting series. These are magical scenes, beautifully captured. It really doesn't get any better than this. Bravo!
