Chesnut Park

Female anhinga with something stuck on her beak.  These birds always strike nice poses. She's probably thinking "I hope you can photoshop this thing off my beak."

Pileated woodpecker stopping for a picture. There's a handful of them living at the park and even if I don't see them I can hear them calling loudly across the woods.

Red shouldered hawk sitting quietly. He was sitting very close to the boardwalk and stayed there while several people walked by and stopped to take pictures.

Some type of warbler.

Coots in the water. Coots are back for the winter and are everywhere.

A tiny alligator getting some sun.

The weather has cooled off a bit. The morning I went out for a walk at Chesnut Park it was windy and cool. The park is mostly wooded and the shade felt much colder than the sun. There was also a strong wind coming off the lake. Even the hawk was fluffed up trying to keep warm. There still wasn't a lot of interesting birds around. Only the usual that we see all year round. Except for the coots. They are here from the north by the thousands.  I only saw the one small alligator. I think since the wind was colder than the water, most of them were staying under water until later in the day.

  1. The color in that Red-shouldered Hawk shot is great! The warbler is a Palm...they have that big eyebrow and are usually wagging their tails up and down.

  10. It looks like you got a great collection of birds (and other wildlife). I like your closeup of the anhinga, great for seeing how it differs from the cormorant I posted. The most striking difference is in the eye color.

  15. Love the little alligator. He is actually pretty cute...but then I am looking at him on a computer screen and not up close and personal. We had one piliated woodpecker on the property, but did now ever see him again. We were so disappointed. These birding shots are awesome. Beautiful photography. Wish I knew more about them...loved your post. genie

  18. Hi there - great set of picture. Was very pleased to see a Pileated woodpecker on a visit to the USA a few years ago - they have been a favourite bird every since.

  21. What a wonderful collection of photos you have here today. I recently visited Florida and I think I saw ALL these species. It was a real treat. As a matter of fact, I posted a pileated woodpecker this week as well.

  22. Awesome photographs Dina! Someday I will get down south and see an Anhinga. They are amazing birds. I love the Pileated Woodpecker. They are not so easy to find in northern California and the Red-shouldered Hawk is one of my favorite buteos. I believe your warbler is a Yellow Warbler, showing those yellow wing and tail edges. And the bonus alligator is fabulous!
