Nothing new at Circle B Bar Reserve

Black bellied whistling ducks says "Oh no, here come the photographers".

"Get my good side".

Red bellied woodpecker says "I'll stop for 4 seconds so you can take the picture. Then I'm back to banging on this dead tree."

Great blue herons says "I caught one this big."

Red shoulder hawk says "I'd be king of the jungle here if it wasn't for that annoying eagle."

Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland was calling my name. I hadn't been there since mid-May. It was still miserably hot there at the end of September but I had heard there baby limpkins there. There's no better reason than that to drive 50 minutes across central Florida. The reserve was pretty quiet. It's still a little early for many of the fall birds so there wasn't too many photographers out there. I didn't see the eagles flying around. I saw very few small migraters such as warblers. But, I did find the baby limpkins. They were so cute! More on those later.

  6. The last 3 photos are great, Dina, but the first two really caught my attention. Ducks in trees! I've seen red-footed boobies in trees, with the claws on the tips of their webbed feet, but never ducks. Apparently they used to be called "Black-bellied tree ducks"!
    Fabulous.
When I enlarged the first photo to show the claws to my husband, I lost my comment, so I'd better post this. But, first, thanks for these photos!

  7. Oh, I love them all, especially the ducks and dishevelled heron. Your bird photography is just gorgeous.

  8. It's weird how similar many of these are to species from Australia, but with differences that seem like I'm looking at shots from a parallel universe!

  13. Fantastic captures Dina! You've stuck it out through the scalding Florida summer now your time is just around the corner. The Florida estuary is coming alive with fleeing snow birds. I hope to be one of them and perhaps steal a little of your thunder later this year.
Another of your excellent posts, cheers!

  14. Hi there - very nice selection of birds - like the flicker, but I'm very pro-woodpecker!

We have ducks that nest in trees - they always seem so out of place.
